In the nearly 25 years of operating the family business Northpointe Storage in Casco Township, probably the strangest thing owners have found in a storage unit is a lot of taxidermy.
Lions, bears and tigers that seemed to be watching you as you entered the unit, said former co-owner Wally Evans.
âIt was probably the strangest we have had,â he said.
On top of that, the storage facility with a 130,000 square foot presence on Marine City Highway is generally fairly quiet, with the exception of the $ 2 million expansion project underway at the moment.
Evans and his son-in-law, current Northpointe Storage owner Adam Janusch, established the business at 9926 Marine City Highway in 1998.
And since then, the company has grown. The company has developed 30 of the 57 acres with an expansion in 2020 of nearly 26,000 square feet and an additional 22,000 square feet in 2021.
âWe assessed the region’s growth and recognized that now is the time to expand,â Janusch said.
The company is constructing eight new self-storage facilities that will provide nearly 75,000 square feet of storage or nearly 500 storage units. The facility will add 309 outdoor storage units and 160 new air-conditioned indoor storage units.
Janusch said he completed the first building and was already renting out his units. They started the project about a year ago, with progress slowed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said they plan to be finished by December 1, as they plan to start constructing a 12,000 square foot building with indoor temperature-controlled storage this fall.
Janusch also plans to pave the way in mid-2022 for a facility in Canton Ira and in 2021 for Lennox, with special indoor units specifically for motorhomes and boats.
He said that in the past two years business has grown by 30% and there has been growth during the pandemic, with people buying, selling, moving and working on their homes.
“They want to make more room,” he said.
He and his stepfather started working together when they both had a small landscaping business and decided to join forces. Now Janusch also has children who work in the companies, which makes three generations involved.
He hopes the family will continue to be involved in the business for generations to come, but they have to be realistic and he knows they have to be passionate to stay involved.
âIt has to be a vocation like any job,â he said.
